Following the September 11th terrorist attack on the Pentagon and the subsequent military action in Afghanistan, the NSDAR Chapter Development Committee, led by Carol Rilling, proposed the idea of establishing a chapter at the Pentagon as a way for NSDAR to honor the building and the women who worked there and for the National Defense. As the Chapter concept grew, it expanded to include all women affiliated with the National Capital Region and with the civilian and military personnel working for the Department of Defense. A prime focus of the new chapter was on recruiting new members to NSDAR, rather than the transfer of existing members from other chapters. On July 1, 2002 Chapter Development Committee members met with five prospective members at the Pentagon to initiate plans for the new chapter concept. That meeting was the beginning of a flurry of activities to advertise the Chapter within the Pentagon and the National Capital Region and also to assist prospective members with applications. By the time the Chapter organized on July 3, 2003 at the Pentagon, there were 44 women signed up as existing or prospective members. Of that group, 39 were new members to NSDAR as a result of Pentagon chapter recruitment. The name of "Pentagon Chapter" was always the first choice for the women involved in establishing the Chapter. The name epitomized all the women who work at, or support the military services and National Defense, especially as the Pentagon is the headquarters for the Department of Defense (DoD) and the military services which were formed in the Revolutionary War period as the Department of War.
When all services combine their efforts for a common mission within the DoD community, they are referred to as a "Joint" activity. The color associated with a "Joint" activity is purple and so our website reflects this.
